Steerman biplane history: An eloquent history of Lloyd Steerman’s career, and of the Steerman biplane, by Frank Hoogkamer, Steerman 75 restorer, owner, pilot. Outline: Lloyd Steerman was naval archetect who got his pilot’s license in the Navy in WWI and became an aircraft designer. He moved from Swallow Aircraft to found New Swallow, then founded TravelAir (with Walter Beech, President, and Clyde Cessna, Sales), to Steerman Aircraft (1928), an independent period during which he designed the Steermans for the Army and Navy, after which he helped buy Loughead, renamed Lockheed (where he worked with Kelly Johnson, designer of the Electra and much more). Steerman then set up a company to convert biplanes to crop dusters, and then finally went back to Electra as VP of Design.
